Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style which originated in America before travelling to the rest of the world. It is often seen on the stages of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength and flexibility. This is a highly energetic dance style.
Classical Ballet is a good discipline for all ages. It promotes strength and core stability as well as improving posture. Beginners and advanced students and adults enjoy the learning process of this graceful, energetic, disciplined form of dance.
Similar to modern theatre dance with the extra flare of using popular music, this stylised dance form has short isolated moves, as well as travelling steps, making jazz entertaining and fun along with enjoying popular music.
Limbering and stretching classes are great for flexibility, strength, and improving the whole physic of the dancer. Exercises in this class are aimed at improving the strength in the abs, looseness in the groin area and improvement of stamina.
National dance is mainly partner work which children love as it means they can work in pairs. The children are taught traditional dances from around the world, along with learning and appreciating different cultures and their history of dance.
Tap is a rhythmic dance form. The dancer uses their feet to strike the floor, beating out different rhythms, with dancers wearing tap shoes which have small metal plates on the toe and heel to give the distinctive sound. Tap dance is a theatrical art form often seen on stage in musicals.
Cheerleading originally very popular in the USA has now landed in the UK. It is a fun energetic class with mix age groups from 5 years to teenagers. It involves learning trust techniques with fellow class mates, strength, balance and confidence. Students learn lifts, tricks and teamwork activities which they perform with other class mates.
Street dance was originally described as dance that was not taught or learnt in a studio atmosphere, but outside on the 'streets'. In our younger street class, we learn basic dance moves to the children's favourite popular chart music, mirroring the words and using a funky dance style.
Commercial dance is our version of MTV! Did you always want to dance like they do in the pop videos? Well now you can. This class is aimed at teenagers who want to take part in a fun, action packed, stylised dance form.
Zumba is a dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez during the 1990s.
Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Zumba's choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included. You don't have to know how to dance, you just follow the instructor and don't even realise your working out.
"I've dropped a dress size, and haven't been a size 8 since I was well...... Probably 8! Come along and have some fun whilst the pounds drop off" - Christine Dawson - SJ Dance Zumba
Zumba Kids - is the kids version of Zumba! Children learn all the different dance styles from around the world, like adult Zumba, but the class is combined with dance games and cartoon characters.- we offer this to local schools.
Although originally formed from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance, but due to its popularity amongst trained dancers and some overlap in movement type, it is often perceived as being closely related to modern dance, ballet and other classical concert dance styles.
In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to utilize both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and modern dance's stress on the torso, and also employs contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance.Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used.
Melody Bear Movement Classes
Melody Movement not only introduces children to dance using the natural actions of the body such as running, walking and jumping but classes focus on fundamental curriculum learning skills such as counting, colour and shape recognition, vocabulary and language skills. The strength of the system is that learning is achieved through creative movement which is enjoyable and fun, making it the ideal entry into the world of dance and ballet.
Melody movement instils a love of dance making if positive element of children’s early lives which stays with them. They learn from a young age how music, movement, dance and the imagination can be combined to tell a story and convey emotions. Please see www.melodybearmovement.com for more info.
